On Art

Picture
My relationship with art is one that expresses aspects of beauty, self-identity, and history.  I find inspiration in personal experiences and impressions, and express these ideas through the creation of objects made of glass, metal, wood and found materials. Developing a body of work has encouraged me to weigh the various methodologies, materials and historical perspectives surrounding a concept so that I can best address the puzzle of creating an aesthetically pleasing solution within the parameters of personal expression.  I also value another school of thought which is to “trust your instinct.”  Analytical thought and understanding of process will only go so far.  Ultimately, I’ve found that as an artist I must have faith – faith in my skill and faith in myself.

On Teaching

Picture
As an instructor I endeavor to create an atmosphere that fosters learning. I believe the best learning environment in creative education is one that offers the most personalized attention to students. I encourage learning by creating a relaxed cooperative environment with regular and constructive feedback. As a fine arts educator I stress building a strong technical foundation as defined by the medium or project, outlining relevant historical perspectives in art, and guiding students in the development of their ideas. I am committed to facilitating dialogue about concepts and developing critical thinking through peer review, individual, and group critiques.
